European Centre for Ethnic, Regional and Sociological Studies (ECERS), University of Maribor

Established in 1989 by the University of Maribor, the European Centre for Ethnic, Regional and Sociological Studies (ECERS) engages in research and research-support activities. Collaborating with partners on the national and international level, the centre's activities encompass a plethora of fields, ranging from European integration to regionalism. In addition to organising panel discussions on pressing social issues, such as the new national and religious groups in Slovenia, or assimilation and cultural pluralism, it closely cooperates with the international non-governmental organisation ISCOMET (International Scientific Conference Minorities for Europe of Tomorrow).

International cooperation

The centre has published a host of monographs and papers, also in English and Serbo-Croatian. In cooperation with the Department of Law at the University of Maribor and professors from foreign universities, it organises a postgraduate study course in International Law.

Notable past projects include the Maribor Initiative (Mariborska pobuda), which endeavoured to enhance the contribution of religious communities towards the reconciliation, respect of diversity, democracy, human rights, protection of minorities, cooperation, and stability in South East Europe.

In conducting research, the centre collaborates with the Council of Europe, the European Union, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN), the International Institute for Ethnic-group Rights and Regionalism (INTEREG), and similar national and international institutions.
